“How pleasant then, if we’re going to fight them in the shade.” So said Spartan King Leonidas, when told Persian archers at Thermopylae were so numerous their arrows would blot out the sun.

Erik Weihenmayer, who is the first blind person to successfully summit Mount Everest, utilized what he calls “optimistic pessimism” to keep his team going on its assault on the mountain. For example, when someone remarked, “It’s cold up here,” his response was, “Yup, but at least it’s wet!”

Be the attitude adjustment that your team needs to accomplish the mission. Gripes go up the chain, never down.
