On this day in (Arizona) history

by The 100 Companies

Nov. 21, 1896 was notable for one fun (gendered) fact: On that date, the Phoenix Post Office moved into quarters equipped with three service windows – two for men and one for women.

Other (not so discriminatory) dates of note are June 1868 when the first P.O. was established, the construction of the Phoenix Post Office and Courthouse in 1913 and the opening of the Phoenix Federal Building in 1936 – the only remaining federal building from the period, an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival design.

Two murals, by artists La Verne Black and Oscar E. Berninghaus, adorn the interior.
