According to Atlas Obscura, one rural Arizona outpost is thought to be the oldest continuously inhabited locale in the United States.
Oraibi Village, located within the Hopi Reservation’s Third Mesa, dates back to 1150 CE. The village remains populated by traditionalists, and their embrace of an off-the-grid lifestyle is evidenced in their adobe homes, traditional farming methods and ancestral crafts, including pottery and weaving.
The present-day seat of the Hopi Tribal Council, established in 1936, is located in Kykotsmovi Village, which is located several miles east of Old Oraibi. More than 6,000 Hopi call northeastern Arizona home.
