Since 1999, May has marked National Military Appreciation Month – a time to honor the service and sacrifice of all current and former military personnel.
The Grand Canyon State’s own Senator John McCain (1936-2018), a Navy brat turned Lieutenant Commander and aviator who served in the Vietnam War, was a key champion of the legislation. McCain spent more than five years as a POW in North Vietnam, a harrowing journey he chronicles in his memoir, “The Restless Wave.”
The staunch Republican represented Arizona in the House of Representatives (1983-87) before moving onto the Senate where he served until his death in 2018.
