When the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ kicked off July 20 in Auckland, spectators from the Grand Canyon State had their eyes on Gabi Rennie – a rising senior at Arizona State – as she made her World Cup debut with the New Zealand Women’s National Team.
Rennie is just the second Sun Devil soccer player in history, joining Amy LePeilbet of Team USA, to be named to her country’s World Cup roster – a rare feat considering women did not hit the World Cup playing field until 1991, when the inaugural tournament was held in China (and the U.S. emerged victorious).
