On July 29, South Pasadena became the first U.S. city to replace 100% of its gas-powered police vehicles with zero-emissions EVs. The fleet of 20 Teslas will charge at city hall and have a solar-powered backup for emergencies.
On paper, EV police vehicles are a brilliant idea. They’re fast, cheap to maintain, safe for occupants and in areas with abysmal air quality (like South Pasadena), their lack of C02 emissions will be more than welcome.
But will it work? Should law enforcement agencies in Arizona be paying close attention, and potentially follow suit? Time will tell, but fingers crossed.
